Sources: Gott Directly Linked to Payments

Court filings in a federal criminal case involving college basketball corruption link former NC State coach Mark Gottfried to being the first head coach directly connected to impermissible payments to players, sources told ESPN.

According to a disclosure from federal prosecutors, former NC State assistant Orlando Early's attorney said his client disclosed that Gottfried on two occasions gave him envelopes -- contained what Early believed was cash - to deliver to star guard Dennis Smith Jr.'s trainer to ensure he signed with the Wolfpack in 2015.

I agree 100%.  College sports will be dead to me!

Agreed.  I have lost relationships with UNC people that I thought were my friends that stunned me with their total disregard with what is right.  At that point, it's time to back away from the farce that is college sports in general.

I recently told my mother that NCAA basketball was about as legitimate as the WWE.  As a lifetime ACC basketball fan, I'm not sure she wanted to hear it.

My take....it was a preemptive strike.  Done to make sure that the world knew that NCSU, et. al. did NOT have any knowledge of wrongdoing.  I am still of the opinion that AD Yow had MORE than just a gut feel that GOTT had drug us into deep doodoo and that his termination was based on what was probably coming (or going) down.

WRAL has this as BREAKING NEWS....lead story.  Early is going to sing like a canary.

What would really be cool now would be for NCSU to terminate all payments to GOTT and then to sue for return of what we have paid him.  This is a large scale chess match....except you don’t know the powers of the pieces or the rules.

Personally, I think that we (NCSU) seem to be taking the offensive and handling it without hiring a multi-Million $$ PR firm.

Sean and Self HAVE to be involved.  Wonder if Adidas sent the money over to GOTT via a high priced “escort”?

You GOTT to wonder if Harrick’s DNA isn’t involved?

I’ll bet that Bobby Lutz is still laughing.  Early worked for Lutz for 5 years at Charlotte and was responsible for him being at State.  One would think that sometime towards the “end”, that Lutz knew or suspected that $$’s were flowing.

The “inconsistencies” in the accounts are fascinating.  Have read and reread it.  Sounds like Early was told that DSJ’s daddy wanted a “finder’s” fee and that Early, as any good employee would, told GOTT.  Then, GOTT made a down payment, but the fee amount escalated and then GOTT went to the First National Adidas Bank and met with the “Loan Officer” and his credit score was OK....so he got the money.

There was a tumultuous explosion in Lutz and GOTT’s relationship.  They clashed and argued openly in practice.  Yow was involved as Lutz was “transferred” to her staff.  That was to get Lutz to a certain level of vesting in the NC State Employees retirement plan, since he would, I think, have been enrolled while at UNC-CLT.  I got an email from him when he finally left and he was very blunt and confirmed that Yow helped him out.

NOW, you really GOTT to wonder if there were OTR conversations or at least some hint at impropriety between Early and Lutz or Lutz and Yow.  But, I would HOPE that if Yow was aware of what went down, she would have blown the whistle herself.

And I thought that the Lockett situation would stir up the Jimmy V Witch Hunting Gang!  I’ll bet they are “getting the band back together” as I type this.

At least we have the dubious distinction of having the “first HC outed”.

Wonder if Peter Golenbock is warming up his word processor for a sequel to Personal Fouls.  Here is an interesting wiki on him...

We were on sports center this morning.
Like I said if they are coming after us we should blow the whole thing up. Tell the NCAA we are going to blow the whistle and dare then to do something. We won't though. We will meekly take our punishment and thank them for their "mercy".

It is looking like I will be completely done with men's sports. I will not be a part of something so corrupt.

We all know the deal.  NC State is disposable in the grand scheme of NCAA $$$ and  ESPN $$$$.  You all know but its all about the cash.

There were many mentions of Bill Self early....what happened to all that shat??  Anyway we are printing and publishing this huge ass story which is a story from a fucking liar who if this is true committed perjury on the stand when he said no one from nc state knew.  Now in a REDACTED statement in sentencing dimes out Gottfried.

F it all, bury us.  Honestly the only shit worth watching are the sports that money doesn't matter in anyway...women's bball and mens baseball.
  • SamIamSamIam Posts: 175
scratch that, men's baseball.  ESPN's interest and love with four womens programs has ruined that too.  I'll still watch the pack women though

Lest we not forget, Sean of the haloed Miller clan, has a pile of mud in his back yard rivaling, figuratively speaking, Mt. Everest.

I really wonder how the NCAA is gonna walk through miles of city streets flooded with a sewer overflow from the elephant refuge to get to STATE to fine us for having a dirty commode seat

    So many thoughts about this:
    1) How appropriate is it that Gott is a gift that keeps on giving long after the relationship has severed?
    2) When Gott relapsed AND brought back Harrick, that should have been enough to shove him out the door. He should have never been hired in the first place, given that he was fired for offcourt behavior AND losing, the Gott era went as well as possible.
    3) Rick - so, if we get punished but UNC doesn’t you won’t continue to support college sports? I guess there is a NASCAResque honesty in having college sports be “May the best cheater win.”
    4) Is anyone surprised that ESPN would attack us while giving passes to their more steady revenue streams. ESPN is unfortunately, a typical media organization, your average street drug dealer on a corner has more decency.

    May the best cheater win

    That's perfect.

From reading the article it sounds like someone leaked Gott's name as it was redacted in the publicly available sentencing memo.  Wonder what the odds are that someone from Carolina was behind that?

And what a waste of cheating too.. we pick up an NBA lottery pick and coach him to "go win the games by yourself".  Gott is a grade A loser.  Even while cheating he put up that travesty of a season.

My thoughts exactly. I mean, if you are going to cheat, at least win while doing it.

Supposedly we had already paid him but he returned the money.

    Chop,
Correct. If we get punished for something relatively small while unc skates for decades of cheating, I am done. Honestly, I am already all but done. I don't watch any teams other than State and I won't watch us play the blues. So it's not a big change. But it will solidify what I already believe, that men's college sports is completely and utterly corrupt.

I read somewhere that payments to some kids exceeded "rookie minimums" which takes it to 7 figures.  I just can't believe it took decades for law enforcement to finally look into what a million people already knew was dirty.  The key to prevention is heavy punishment closer to the beginning.  I would be jailing shoe executives, head coaches, assistants, ADs, the players and parents accepting money.  There has to be a considerable amount of tax evasion on top of everything else.  Shoe Dog is an excellent read and grounds for jail time.

    Rick and Troll and OTHERS....

First >> ESPN and the LEAK.  Folks WILL recall that John Skipper (UNC Alum) was head of ESPN and also CO-Chairman of Disney.  That ain't exactly the "Office Boy" position.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Skipper

From folks that are in the media and also WELL UNC Connected, Skipper copped a "Substance Abuse" departure rather than the DAMNING "#MeToo stigma.  I have NO other info on that....but it was something that was from a good source and not a fake news or twitter item.

Obviously being a druggie is better than a Harry Weinstein and the #MeToo crowd will hunt you down and destroy you....NOTE...remember the old joke...

Mama, I am a Piano Player in a Whore House.."  said the bright college graduated Political Science major.  He said that rather than tell her that he was working for that scurrilous Politician (Fill in Party affiliation) that just got caught in a mass  Bi-Sexual orgy with the entire city council and the First (fill in religious affiliation) Church on main street's entire  church choir

Now WOULD John have hired UNC folks at ESPN?  Surely they would NOT have pulled a DEAN and reported or leaked the info?  That would be right up there with Dean reporting DT for a pickup game with Eddie Biedenbach (sp?).

Second >> Assume that the "HE" in Rick's post was Dennis Smith, SR.  SO HE paid back Gott's original BRIBE?  Wow, there really IS honor among thieves if that happened...  If the HE is someone else....pardon my thick headiness this morning.

    This AIN'T going away....

I live in Alabama and the UNC scandal is to this day still used by radio show callers as the perfect example of the NCAA’s laissez-faire attitude toward certain institutions while hammering others for much less. Thankfully those jokers haven’t fooled the general public. I’m almost to the point where I’d be ok with the total collapse of the NCAA in favor of a pure unabashedly $ driven system if it meant all of the crooked NCAA bozos lost their jobs. No, I’m there.
